2020 ACM Awards: Dan + Shay Excited for First Performance Back but Also ‘Geeking Out’ for Taylor Swift

See all three Wednesday night!

September 16, 2020

The 2020 ACM Awards most nominated duo Dan + Shay dropped by this year's virtual Radio Row in Nashville to chat with RADIO.COM's Katie Neal ahead of this year's show.

Besides having each acquired solo noms of their own, together Dan + Shay are nominated for four awards including, Vocal Duo of the Year as well as, Song of the Year, Video of the Year, and Vocal Event of the Year for their song with Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours.”

Katie made sure to check if the boys were ready, asking if they’ve “practiced doing the pose where you hold all of them at once, just in case.” Dan chimed in, “we don’t want to jinx it.” To which Katie replied, making the most valid of points, “we also don’t want to drop one, remember when Taylor dropped one of her GRAMMYs?” Well, as they are a duo, having four hands instead of two will most definitely help when it comes to grasping onto the tall trophy.

For this years ceremony Dan + Shay aren’t just nominated, but will also be performing. As this year’s awards will be quite different, performances will be spread out across three different iconic venues, The Bluebird Cafe, Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry, where Dan + Shay will most likely leave us “Speechless” with their performance of “I Should Probably Go To Bed.”

Excitedly Dan expressed, “it’s gonna be awesome,” but admitted he was feeling the pressure. “I feel like there’s so much history at those venues.” Sarcastically adding, “Yeah just go perform there, if you haven’t performed in six months, it’s okay, just go and it’ll be great, so.”

Another aspect of their first performance back that makes things quite different, this year there will be no audience. And as the ACMs usually take place in an arena, with thousands in the crowd, Shay contemplated the differences.

“It’s crazy, it goes off, its amazing, and you’re able to kind of feed off the energy of the crowd and this is definitely the absolute opposite of that… no one is there, you’re kinda singing to the cameramen… it’s wild… but we’re excited.”

Besides being thrilled for their own nominations and performance, Katie asked which of the others they’re most excited for. Dan mentioned he "heard Taylor Swift was performing,” and expressed he’s “excited for that,” Shay agreed. Dan added, “we’re huge Taylor Swift fans… we’re gonna be geeking out when she’s up there on stage.”

Before letting them go Katie asked for any news on a new project and possible new music from them. Of course, the duo remained mum, and after joking around with Katie, Dan offered up the following, “we’re working on stuff for sure… all this extra time allows us to get a little deeper on the music, we can be more creative… so there will be some stuff here soon.”

Well, there you have it folks, no new music as of yet, but it’s a comin’. For now you can get your dose of Dan + Shay with the entire interview above and then at the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards, hosted by Keith Urban, Wednesday, September 16 at 8PM on CBS.
