Elon Musk surpasses Jeff Bezos as world's richest person

January 8, 2021

Elon Musk is officially the richest person in the world.

With a net worth of $191 billion, the CEO of Tesla soared past Jeff Bezos, who previously held the title since 2017.

According to Bloomberg’s billionaire tracker, Bezos is worth about $185 billion.

Bill Gates takes third place with $134 billion.

CNBC notes that at the kickstart of 2020, Musk was only worth about $27 billion, which barely put him into the top 50 of richest people.

However, he can thank Tesla’s accelerating share prices for gaining momentum.

On Thursday, a 6% rise in Tesla shares lifted Musk’s stock holdings and options by $10 billion.

The outlet notes that the company’s market value has grown to more than $760 billion in 10 years.

Musk’s trajectory has been impressive. In July, he surpassed Buffett to become the seventh-richest person, and by November, he pushed past Gates to become the second-richest person. His fortune at the time was valued at $128 billion.

Over the course of 12 months, he gained more wealth than Gates’ entire net worth of $132 billion.

Musk is also the primary shareholder and CEO of SpaceX, but since it is privately held, its value does not fluctuate as much as Tesla’s.

Additionally, the 49-year-old previously unveiled "Tesla Tequila," an alcohol that the company describes as "premium 100% de agave tequila añejo aged in French oak barrels. The liquor is described as “a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish. The tequila sold out only hours after going on sale.
