The Top 5 Most Common Reasons People Get Divorced

February 4, 2019

Not all marriages are destined to work out. According to INSIDER divorce rates are declining, but a big part of that is due to millennials not getting married to begin with.

Of the married couples who are getting divorced, what are the top reasons? INSIDER analyzed a study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and here’s the top 5:

5) Financial Problems
36.1% say that finances played the biggest role in their divorce, whether it’s them having different money habits or even one of them secretly hiding/spending money.

4) Getting Married Too Young
45% believe they were married too young, too soon. Society has shifted so that getting married as soon as possible isn’t our goal anymore. Being married by the time you’re in your early 20’s was the norm fifty years ago; now, people are waiting until their late 20’s and beyond before they say “I do.”

3) Fighting Too Much
Communication is the most important part of a relationship, so 57.7% say fighting, and most importantly, not being able to resolve lingering issues, is ultimately what doomed their marriage.

2) Cheating
59.6% say cheating ruined their marriage. INSIDER says some of the most common reasons people cheat revolve around insecurity and feeling like their partner doesn’t love them.

1) Lack of Commitment
75% say that feeling of commitment that is a driving force in all relationships faded or away or just wasn’t there in their marriage.
