Today (January 22) marks ten years since Heather Ledger’s death.

It was a moment that shocked the nation (and world), as he was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He was just 28 when he passed away. His death was ruled an accidental overdose caused by a combination of prescription drugs.

We’re remembering the late actor’s legacy by looking back on three of his most memorable roles on film:

The Dark Knight - 2008
This was one of Ledger’s final roles on film, but it definitely was one of his most iconic characters that he ever played. He played the role of the psychopathic criminal mastermind, the Joker. Ledger’s performance would posthumously win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2009.

10 Things I Hate About You – 1999
Ledger played the role of Patrick Verona in this movie. He was a very convincing “bad boy,” and he was hired to date Kat (played by Julia Stiles). Of course, he falls for her in the process.

Brokeback Mountain – 2005
In this movie, Ledger played Ennis Del Mar. Del Mar, who is a sheep herder in Wyoming, developed a romantic relationship with his colleague, Jack West in the American West. Ledger was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards that year.
