John Legend Releases "In America" As Underground Kicks Off New Season

March 22, 2017

If you've been watching the new season of the dramatic television series Underground, then you've probably already heard bits and pieces of some brand new music from John Legend

The WGN series, which Legend is an executive producer of, tells the story of slaves escaping a plantation to cross 600 miles to freedom. The new track released today, entitled "In America" debuted during the show's season two premiere, and examines the contradictions of life in the United States by mixing positives and negatives. Legend has said the song is about the duality of America,

The song points out the tension between the promise of America, the ideals of America, and sometimes us not living up to those ideals in practice. ‘In America’ was perfect song for Underground, a series I’m incredibly proud to be a part of, and one that does a beautiful job of portraying a challenging time in our nation’s history while reminding us that change is possible.

Legend will make a cameo on Underground portraying abolitionist Frederick Douglas during the April 5th episode.
