Why Holding Hands Is Good For You

March 13, 2018

I’m one of those weirdos who’s all about holding hands...I feel like it’s one of the most intimate thing you could do with another person. I won’t bore you with the details, but there’s just something about being physically connected to another human being that’s pretty great.

There’s also A LOT of people out there who hate it *cough*Matt Harris*cough*. If you hold hands with someone too long your palms get sweaty, and people tend to have certain rules about personal space in general.

However, science says there’s some pretty interesting health benefits to holding hands. A recent study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a couple’s breathing, heart rate and brain waves synch up during hand holding, causing both to feel less physical pain. Also, someone feeling empathy toward their partner’s pain while holding hands is a powerful way to make that synchronization happen.

So there’s quite a bit of truth to the power of touch...I don’t really have anyone to hold hands with, so for I’ll just stare at this picture and pretend it’s me.
