Happy World Emoji Day! ------

Ever wonder why today is World Emoji Day? It's because the calendar emoji shows the date as July 17th! Ha!

I never realised that until today and that's not even getting into the 10 fun facts about emojis either. That's a bonus factoid for you. This day is used to celebrate all things emojis and encourage people to use them in their conversations.

10 Facts About Emojis:

1. The term "emoji" comes from the Japanese words "e" (means picture) and "moji" (character).

2. More than 900 million emojis are sent every day without text on Messenger–or as Facebook put it, “A --[smile emoji> is worth 1,000 words.”

3. More emojis are sent through Facebook Messenger on New Year’s Eve than on any other day, a fact that applies to every country in which Facebook operates. I wonder why New Year's Eve is the time when we are sending the most emojis?

4. In 2015 Oxford Dictionaries named the Face with Tears of Joy emoji as their Word of the Year.

5. The emoji options seem to get updated at least once if not twice per year. Apple just announced their list of new editions that will be coming to an iOS update later this year. The new emojis include red heads, curly haired people, bald heads, and a peacock to name a few.

6. People are using the heart emoji twice as much on Facebook compared to last year. It is quite popular.

7. The laughing crying face is the most popular emoji in the U.S. and the U.K., while the birthday cake is the most used emoji in Australia, Canada and Germany.

8. The crying laughing face is the most used emoji in North Carolina and the apple is the on top in South Carolina. I wonder why it's not the peach instead for the Gaffney peach?

9. Half of all comments on Instagram include emojis.

10. The word emoji has appeared in Oxford Dictionaries since 2013.
