5 Ways To Be Happier On Happiness Day

March 20, 2017

Today, March 20th is International Day of Happiness. Although the "holiday" is still relatively new, it's a day that we should all try and get behind. The day was created to teach us that happiness doesn't come from money, material objects, or status.

So if you aren't exactly feeling happy on International Day of Happiness, here are a few things that can help you jump on the happiness train.

1. Spend less time on social media and online: I know we are so connected to everyone and everything that sometimes the idea of a little social media hiatus may cause some stress, but it can be a good thing. All the perfect photos people post or all the political fights start to take a toll on our moods and can even affect our mental health. Plus if your phone is in your face you could be missing out on living the life that is happening all around you. Remember what you see on Instagram or Facebook isn't always true. People share the parts of their lives that they only want people to see.

2. Get enough sleep: Sleep deprivation can have an impact on our work and our mood. It can also start to age us prematurely. Even a little afternoon nap can help turn that frown upside down and turn all your negative thoughts into more positive ones, according to a study

3. Volunteer and helps others: Science says that helping others just two hours per week which is 100 hours per year can help make us become overly happier. You probably think buying yourself would make you happier, but the truth is spending money and surprising others has a much bigger impact on our overall happiness.

4. Worry Less: There are certain things in our lives that we have absolutely no control over. So if you can realize that your worrying about these things will have no bearing on what ends up happening, you will worry less and feel better.

5. Forgive: This is a huge one. Harboring bad feelings for someone or something can really make us miserable deep down inside. You don't have to forget what made you so upset, but letting go and forgiving someone can be a very powerful thing.

And remember, it's never too late to become what you've always wanted to be. So if your job is making you miserable or you've always wanted to go back to school, just do it. Life is too short to not find happiness.
