There were a lot of events in 2017 that may have impacted our mental health and well-being. Mass shootings, huge natural disasters, and an overall unrest amongst people are just some of the issues we deal with constantly in the United States.

Events like these coupled with weather and the area we live can really make our break our well-being. The well-being of the average American dropped more in 2017 than in any year since Gallup began tracking it in 2008. This well-being index is used to help Gallup decifer the happiest and the most miserable states. The index consists of five categories: sense of purpose, social relationships, financial security, relationship to community and physical health.

The results of the well-being index were combined with other socioeconomic data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, and other sources to create this list. How do you think North Carolina did? How about South Carolina?

North and South Carolina did not appear on either of thise lists. So how did the Carolina's do? South Carolina ranked #37 out of 50 which means this state is more miserable than happy. Low income and poverty levels are likely the reason behind the ranking. North Carolina, on the other hand, placed at #19 which is good. That indicates that NC is a happier state. "55% of adults in the state believe they have reached most of their goals in the past 12 months, one of the larger shares of any state. Additionally, 77% of adults believe they receive positive energy from their friends and family on a daily basis, the sixth largest share nationwide." This is why we ranked higher than SC.

You can see futher breakdowns of each state's ranking on the list below.
