I guess they don't call dogs man's best friend for nothing. According to a new study, there is a list of different health benefits that owning a dog can have for a person or family.

The first one comes from the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. They found that having a dog as a pet could be beneficial to babies and young children. The dog can help to baby build up its system against certain allergies and even help prevent asthma from developing. This benefit is only seen in children and babies. Adults do not have the same reaction to living with a dog.

If you struggle to sleep at night, a dog can help you get more restful sleep. According to a new study from The Mayo Clinic, letting your dog sleep with you can help get a better night's rest. The newest Mayo study tracked the sleep quality of 40 dog-owning participants with no sleep disorders over the course of five months. The participants and their pooch had to wear monitoring devices that helped measure their sleep quality.

Just having your dog in the room helps you sleep better because it offers a sense of security. But those who allow their dogs to sleep in the bed with them ended up getting less sleep overall.

Also, dogs provide companionship to their owner. People who aren't lonely tend to live longer lives. So perhaps a dog is just the thing to get your aging parent this Holiday season.

Remember, there are so many incredible dogs in local shelters looking for their forever homes. If you're thinking about adding a pet to the family, consider adoption.
