John Mayer Joining Bud Light Dive Bar Tour Hypocritical?

July 20, 2017

A lot of people are criticizing John Mayer today! He's currently on The Search for Everything tour and will be in Charlotte next month. But it's not his current tour that has people calling him a big hypocrite.

Last week Mayer did a very intimate interview with Rolling Stone and revealed that he no longer drinks alcohol. Instead, he is using marijuana. “I put it where drinking used to go,” Mayer, 39, revealed in Rolling Stone’s July 13 issue. “The quality of life has gone up considerably. Drinking is a f—king con. It always felt wrong.”

So is he saying he's an alcoholic? He continues in the interview: "Every time I drank, I was looking for some sort of regulated amount. It always feels wrong for me. I always feel like I went overboard. I said two, now it's three, now we're at four?"

And this is why people are calling him a hypocrite. Yesterday Anheuser-Busch announced that John would be joining their Dive Bar Tour. The announcement came with a photo of Mayer, who has quit drinking, posing at a bar with a pint of beer next to him.

Let's just assume that Mayer may be a recovering alcoholic. Even if that's the case, I know plenty of alcoholics that are active in their recovery and have a lot of sobriety under their belts that still go into bars with friends. They just don't drink. Maybe the issue people have with this bar tour and the photo is that Anheuser-Busch is behind it. If John doesn't drink why is he helping promote a brand that makes beer?

Here's my thought, I think Mayer is more focused on the small venue for the tour. John has been known to show up in New York City and LA to small bars an surprise patrons with an intimate, impromptu set. Mayer is looking it as more of an opportunity to play the kind of show he truly enjoys in a small setting. It's not about Bud Light or Anheuser-Busch.
