Man Flu is Real According to Science

I need to see the research on this!

December 12, 2017

It's flu season. Hopefully you went and had your flu shot to help you prevent getting the flu this year. There are already plenty of news reports about it being a nasty one this year. Plus, some health professionals feel that this year's vaccination may not actually prevent you from getting the strain of flu that's going around this year.

I had my shot in September so here's hoping that it works because I haven't had the flu in years. Gosh, I hope I didn't just jinx myself...

The real flu is terrible and takes everything out its victims for days.

But what about the whole phenomenon behind "man flu?" According to wikipedia, Man flu is "a pejorative phrase that refers to the idea that men, when they have a bad cold, exaggerate and claim they have the flu." I am sure you know at least one man that becomes a drama Queen when he gets the sniffles. I almost married one ten years ago. He was the most over dramatic person if he had a runny nose and would immediately want to be waited on hand and foot and mothered. Yeah, no thanks!

What are the tell-tale symptoms of Man Flu?

1. They instantly become a victim. No one person has ever suffered the way they have with their symptoms.

2. They become completely helpless. Even the most helpful man will become useless when he is suffering from the man flu.

3. They want all the food and are extremely picky. Your chicken soup won't do. They want the soup their mommy made them when they were little boys. You best hope Mamma is still alive and able to whip up her famous man flu remedy and fast.

I have bad news for anyone who deals with a man flu patient. Up until today, we could all roll our eyes and laugh at the over-the-top ridiculous behavior, but now research has found that the man flu may actually be real.

One doctor in Canda seems to have found some research that backs men's claims that man flu is the real deal and it's far worse than the flu any woman could suffer.

Dr. Kyle Sue found that "the research does point towards men having a weaker immune response when it comes to common viral respiratory infections and the flu,” said Sue, a clinical assistant professor in family medicine from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. “This is shown in the fact that they [have> worse symptoms, they last longer, they are more likely to be hospitalised and more likely to die from it.”

But the man flu as we know it isn't actually the flu. It's a small cold, runny nose, or tummy ache that some men blow up to bethe black plague. So with that being said, I feel like this Doctor's claims are already false. As for who suffers more when they have actual influenza, well maybe his research has a leg to stand on, but I am still not convinced.

You can read more of Dr. Sue's findings in Thne Guardian's article below.
