Have you ever seen the movie Idiocracy? It's about a man who is put to sleep for five centuries by the Pentagon only to wake up and discover that people have gotten so dumb and he's the smartest person alive.

The movie seemed very far-fetched when it came out in 2006, but now the writers may have been on to something with society. Are we becoming dumber over time?

That's what research has found over the last few decades. The study found that IQ scores in Western culture have been on the decline and they just get lower with every new generation. How much are our scores dropping? Seven points per generation! Eek!

Why are we becoming dumber? I was born in 1979, so I went to elementary school in the 80's. Computers were around, but they didn't dominate our lives. We took classes in grammar, spelling, and math. We had to learn to do all of those things without the assistance of a computer or device. Now technology has made things easier for people, but that could come at the cost of people becoming dumber.

The study found that a decline in the quality of education, poor diets, and social media all are contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I remember when I had a question about something I had to look it up in a book or encyclopedia. We didn't have the internet and all of its resources available 24/7.
