Weighing Yourself Daily Can Help You Lose Weight?

I think it can also make you crazy!

Losing weight is super hard. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. You have to begin to make better food choices and limit your portion sizes. And you have to start to incorporate some sort of physical activity into your day to keep losing and toning up. 

I found an article this afternoon talking about the key to losing weight is weighing yourself every single day. In case you didn't know, I used to be 350lbs or so. I say or so because I got to the point where I was so depressed I just didn't want to know anymore. You're probably dying to know how I lost all the weight. I had bariatric surgery in 2007. It changed my life, and I lost a lot of weight quickly. It was almost overwhelming how quickly my body changed. But I was in a crappy place in my personal life and didn't make the necessary lifestyle changes to keep the weight off. 

I regained some and again was unhappy with myself. I weighed myself every single day hoping that the meal replacement shake or magic pill I was trying would help me lose at least one freakin' pound. I ended up being in this unhealthy and low place where my entire day was impacted by what the damn scale said. 

Fast forward to 2014. I underwent a revision to my weight loss surgery. I knew what I did wrong diet and exercise wise and vowed not to make that mistake a second time. But I still had the scale and the daily ritual of weighing myself when i woke up. I also weighed myself after I went to the bathroom and sometimes before bed. Again, the scale was ruling my life. There are other ways to know you're on track with your diet and fitness plan. You can take measurements and see if you've lost inches. How are your clothes fitting? Are your pants starting to get a bit baggy in the butt? Those are all signs you are going in the right direction. 

This past February I threw out my scale. It was so freeing and I felt like a weight had been lifted. Now I only weigh in when I go to my doctor's. I use those other methods I mentioned above to help me gauge my progress. Maybe some people need that daily weigh in to keep them accountable. But for me, it just put me in a really bad headspace and made me do some pretty crazy yo-yo diets.
