What's Really in Movie Theater Popcorn Butter?

November 8, 2017

This is one of those glass half full scenarios. Is ignorance bliss or is knowledge power when it comes to knowing what goes into the butter you top your popcorn with when going to the movies?

Fun fact: When I was in high school, I worked at the movie theater concession stand. Every single time I worked I came home smelling like I rolled around in the popcorn bin and doused myself with the butter. While that may smell good to you every once in awhile when you go to the theater, I promise you it quickly becomes nauseating.

I try to make healthy food choices, but I do get popcorn when I go to the movies, and I put butter on it. It's an every once and awhile thing, and it's okay in moderation. Eater.com, a popular website about all things food, has the skinny (poor choice of words here) on what's in that liquid gold you're adding to your popcorn.

Without giving away all of Eater's secret findings, I can tell you that the butter you are adding on top has zero butter in it. Oh and this fake butter product is way worse for you than regular butter and can more than double the calories in your popcorn!

So next time you head to the theater, you may want to think twice before you hit up the butter pump. Your arteries and overall health will thank you.
