You Aren't A Millennial If You Use These Words

June 26, 2017

What exactly is a millennial? I always assumed they are people who were born in the late 80's and after. But I did some digging, and it seems the exact definition of millennial isn't clear.

Some say Millennials were born as early as 1976, but that's a popular opinion. Nelson, who does TV and radio ratings, categories Millennials as being born between 1977-1995. But the majority of people qualify someone a millennial if they were born from 1982-1998. I think my favorite definition is from Pew research, "those born after 1980 and the first generation to come of age in the new millennium." I think Pew is onto something and we all just need to get on the same page and go with their definition.

Millennials tend to get a bad rap, but honestly, this group os people have done some phenomenal things and created a lot of useful products and services.

-Four out of ten millennials have completed at least bachelor's degree in 2016.

-Millennials make up 25% of the US population!

-Millennials believe that both the mother and father have equal responsibility for childcare.

Since we are still so mixed up on when exactly the birth year begins for being considered a millennial, I found another way to figure out if you are one or not. Hell, I am still trying to decide if I am one or not. I was born in 1979, so I could technically go either way.

A coworker/friend who is most certainly a millennial sent me a link to an article. The article talks about the words people who aren't Millennials use often. Apparently, certain words show our age. So what are some of the words that made the list?

1. Awesome- I use this word all the damn time.

2. Cool- Apparently using the word cool as a response or to describe something you like is uncool if you are in fact a millennial.

3. Right- If you're using this word as a way to acknowledge what someone is saying, you aren't a Millennial. They opt to use body language instead.

See the other words that made the list here! Just because you aren't technically a Millennial doesn't mean you can't learn their lingo.

There are words like "trill", "JOMO", "GOAT"(not the animal), and more. And some of these words are words we have used forever, but Millennials have given them new meanings. See the list here

Oh, and as for me, I am not a Millennial because out of the eight words on that list I linked to, I use seven! Bam!
