Bystanders watched as flames rose from the iconic landmark and smoke filled the Paris air, just days before Easter. Police say there were no deaths, and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.
French President Emmanuel Macron canceled his scheduled address to the nation, tweeting out his heartache over the fire. "Like all our countrymen, I'm sad tonight to see this part of us burn," he said.
Around 30,000 people visit the church daily; 13 million people from around the work make the trek to visit this historic landmark every year.
