How Far Should You Live From Your Family?
May 30, 2019

Living close to your family can be good in some cases, but for most it sounds like a nightmare they’d rather avoid.
A recent survey of 2,000 adults found that 57% say there needs to be some driving distance between them and their parents and/or in-laws. While living in the same neighborhood out of the question, 27% say 15-45 minutes is the ideal driving distance.
If just reading about the idea of your family members living close by is making you nervous, here’s a few more stats from the survey to stress you out:
- 37% don’t want their family members living close enough to them to drop by unannounced
- 38% say living within five minutes of their parents or in-laws would be too stressful
- 64% of parents say they don’t want their adult children living with them
And if people HAD to have a family member live nearby, the most popular choice was their siblings...in a shocker, the in-laws were dead last.
